As the current white oak population ages over the next 50 years, there’s not a sustainable source of new seedlings to supply the unprecedented demand from bourbon production and other timber-related industries. As a result, scientists are working to replicate select white oaks with “superior genetics.”

When downed trees blocked access to the KEWS tower, used for emergency communications, KEWS reached out to the Kentucky Division of Forestry to restore access to the tower.
With the proper training, DAQ inspectors can determine whether too much of a harmful contaminant is being released into the surrounding air by observing a plume of smoke billowing from a smoke stack. To receive that training, they attend “Smoke School.”
